Altar de la parroquia de Lesme

From the Series: Days of Future Past

The “Altar de la Parroquia de Lesme”  artwork reimagines sacred spaces through the lens of nature, blending traditional religious architectural forms with organic elements. White columns with red accents rise gracefully, while climbing plants reach toward the ceiling and gentle waterfalls cascade downward, leading the eye toward the altar’s central figure: the sacred orange tree. This tree, a symbol of life and transformation, replaces conventional religious icons, redefining the altar’s spiritual narrative.

At the top, a delicate sprout emerges, symbolising growth and continuity, juxtaposing reverence with subtle irony. The work captures a dialogue between the sacred and the natural, challenging traditional interpretations while celebrating life’s interconnectedness.

About “Days of Future Past” Collection

Days of Future Past is a collection of evocative drawings by Riccardo Rossi, created for The Orange Republick project. This series explores a thought-provoking vision of a reclaimed world, where nature envelops iconic landmarks and thrives in the absence of humanity. Each artwork reimagines a harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature—or envisions a future where nature flourishes unopposed, reclaiming its dominance over human-made landscapes. The collection offers a narrative of renewal, ecological balance, and the fragility of the environment.

Technique

Riccardo Rossi uses Caran d’Ache pencils to reinterpret antique illustrations from “España artística y monumental: vistas y descripción de los sitios y monumentos más notables de España” by Don Genaro Pérez de Villa-Amil (1842–1850). These antique prints, sourced from flea markets, become the foundation for Rossi’s paradoxical landscapes. Through this technique, historic landmarks are transformed, surrounded by lush orange trees, vibrant grass, and crystalline waters, offering a serene, post-human vision where nature thrives.
