La Catedral de Córdoba

From the Series: Days of Future Past

La Catedral de Córdoba is an evocative piece that bridges the spiritual and natural worlds, beautifully reflecting the fusion of Islamic and Christian architectural heritage within one of Spain’s most sacred spaces. The artwork invites the viewer into a space where history and nature intertwine, a bright pond, situated at the heart of the composition, serves as a symbolic mirror, reinventing the physical beauty of the cathedral’s interior creating a deeper symbolism of purification and introspection. The surrounding vegetation, lush with flourishing grasses and plants, invoking the idea of nature’s quiet endurance, as well as the harmony between human-made structures and the natural environment. At the center of this serene tableau, the bitter orange, a symbol deeply tied to the cultural and religious significance of Córdoba, takes on a central role. Its presence here underscores a sacred connection between the divine and the earth, bridging the organic world with the spiritual.

In La Catedral de Córdoba, the viewer is not only invited to experience the architectural grandeur of the cathedral but also to reflect on the delicate balance between sacred spaces and the natural world that surrounds them.

About “Days of Future Past” Collection

Days of Future Past is a collection of evocative drawings by Riccardo Rossi, created for The Orange Republick project. This series explores a thought-provoking vision of a reclaimed world, where nature envelops iconic landmarks and thrives in the absence of humanity. Each artwork reimagines a harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature—or envisions a future where nature flourishes unopposed, reclaiming its dominance over human-made landscapes. The collection offers a narrative of renewal, ecological balance, and the fragility of the environment.

Technique

Riccardo Rossi uses Caran d’Ache pencils to reinterpret antique illustrations from “España artística y monumental: vistas y descripción de los sitios y monumentos más notables de España” by Don Genaro Pérez de Villa-Amil (1842–1850). These antique prints, sourced from flea markets, become the foundation for Rossi’s paradoxical landscapes. Through this technique, historic landmarks are transformed, surrounded by lush orange trees, vibrant grass, and crystalline waters, offering a serene, post-human vision where nature thrives.
